Physical and chemical properties and applications of Magnesium Oxide

Magnesium Oxide (industrial), molecular formula MgO, relative molecular weight 40.30. Industrial Magnesium Oxide is a white amorphous powder wood that is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic. The apparent specific volume is above 4ml/g, insoluble in water, insoluble in alcohol, and soluble in acid or ammonium salt solutions. The solubility in water increases with the increase of CO ₂ content in water, with a melting point of 2852 ℃ and a boiling point of 3600 ℃. After being burned at high temperatures above 1000 ℃, it can be converted into crystals. When the temperature rises above 1500 ℃, it becomes dead burned magnesium oxide or sintered magnesium oxide. Absorb carbon dioxide and water from the air to generate basic Magnesium Carbonate. Magnesium oxide is afraid of water and moisture during storage and transportation, and is prone to spoilage when exposed to water

Industrial Magnesium Oxide is mainly used in the manufacturing of ceramics, enamel, refractory materials, etc; As a filling material in the manufacturing of polishing agents, adhesives, and paints; Used as a vulcanization accelerator, acid absorber, and catalyst in synthetic fibers and rubber (chloroprene rubber, fluororubber, butyl rubber, CPE chlorinated polyethylene rubber);

Used as an antacid and pouring agent in medicine, for the treatment of excessive stomach acid, gastric and duodenal ulcers;

In food processing, it can be used as a decolorizing agent for sugar refining, a decolorizing agent for ginsenosides, and a pH regulator for ice cream powder;

A promoter for polymerized rosin modified phenolic resin (ink resin);

In the construction industry, magnesium oxide can be used to produce magnesium containing special cement (magnesium oxychloride cement) and insulation boards;

The biggest use in agriculture is as fertilizer and feed for ruminant livestock, which is a major element in the metabolic processes of plants and animals. When used as feed for cows, it can prevent nervous system dysfunction caused by magnesium deficiency, known as grass spasms;

Used in the chemical industry to manufacture magnesium metal and magnesium chemicals, such as magnesium sulfate, magnesium chloride, and other chemicals;

In addition, it is also used for water treatment, washing of flue gas, and in industries such as glass, dyes, cables, silicon steel, uranium processing, electronics, insulation materials, friction materials, fiberglass, as well as in industries such as petroleum additives, casting, and phenolic plastics.
